2018 Summer Math and Science Honors Academy (SMASH)

The Summer Math and Science Honors Academy (SMASH) is a free of cost, STEM-intensive college preparatory program for underrepresented high school students of color. SMASH boasts a rigorous 5-week, 3-year summer, fully residential STEM enrichment program which provides access to STEM coursework and access to mentors, role models, and support networks of students of color.

Drexel University Summer Institutes

Drexel’s summer academic programs are open to highly motivated high school students who wish to explore what a university-level program is all about. Workshops are led by Drexel faculty and utilize Drexel’s labs, facilities, and the city of Philadelphia’s many resources.

Forensic Science Mentoring Institute (FMI)

A full-time, 7-week forensic science research program where students are given orientation in laboratory safety and practice, laboratory skills, and analytical chemistry.

Immersion Science Program (Fox Chase Cancer Center)

An 11-week laboratory research training course for students over 16 years old who have completed Chemistry and Biology is comprised of boot camp training in lab techniques in the context of a screen for nutrients that impact cancer signaling. Short lectures highlight conceptual skills including the cellular basis for cancer and the use of Drosophila in cancer research. Students advance to tackle challenges including experimental design and analysis while developing their own novel research projects aimed at defining how diet influences cancer signaling.

Monell Chemical Senses Center Science Apprenticeship Program

The program brings high school and undergraduate college students to the Center each summer to conduct experiments related to the senses and nutrition.

Penn Academy for Reproductive Sciences (PARS)

An all-female workshop led by expert clinicians and scientists. PARS incorporates a mix of small-group discussions, demonstrations, and hands-on lab activities to explore current research topics in reproductive health. Topics include: female reproductive anatomy and physiology, fertilization, embryo development, stem cells, genetics, epigenetics, and oncofertility. You will also dive into a journal article, discuss ethical decision-making, and prepare for future careers in science and medicine! All female high school students (grades 10-12), who are interested in science and medicine, are invited to apply.

Penn Academy for Skin Health (PASH)

All Philadelphia public 10-12 graders qualify for this FREE 4 Saturday program. Students in this program will engage with scientists and clinicians in the dermatology field, perform laboratory experiments using state-of-the-art research equipment, discover genetic and environmental-based dermatologic diseases, network with Penn faculty and staff to learn about careers in both research and medicine, and participate in a College 101 workshop.

Penn Institute for Regenerative Medicine Summer Internship

Students entering 11-12th grade or in community college will be exposed to the daily life of a researcher, not just in the lab but within the university setting as a whole. Students work side-by-side with members of IRM labs, implementing many fundamental laboratory skills. IRM summer interns participate in weekly science article reviews, bioethical case studies, and shadowing experiences with other IRM summer interns and their mentees.

WorkReady summer programs are paid, six-week experiences that give young people, ages 14 to 21, the opportunity to learn and earn in corporate or community-based settings. There are several different kinds of programs, including internships, academically-focused and service learning experiences.

The University of Pennsylvania BioMedical Graduate Studies Summer Undergraduate Internship Program

The SUIP program is designed to provide an intense research experience to students interested in graduate student in the biomedical sciences.  Interns complete ten weeks of full-time laboratory research, listen to state-of-the-art research seminars and workshops, attend The Leadership Alliance National Symposium, and present their research at the SUIP Research Symposium at the end of the program.
